School-age Provider

Job Overview: A school age provider is an individual working with or on behalf of children ages 5 to 12 years old who are served in school age care settings. This can include providing breakfast and snack meals, supervising homework, tutoring, enrichment activities, planning appropriate field trips, and planning developmentally appropriate lesson plans and activities.

Places of Possible Employment: Childcare centers, before/afterschool programs, camps, and youth centers

Minimum Education & Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years old
High school diploma or its equivalent
BSAC (Basic School Age Care) Certificate- must be completed within 90 days of hire date
NC School Age Credentials (suggested)

Recommended Education¹
Level 1: Includes knowledge and skills with minimal training and education

Level 2: Level 1 plus Youth Development Credential, certificate in youth development, or equivalent training/education

Level 3: Levels 1 and 2 plus an associate degree in Child or Youth Development or related fields

Level 4: Levels 1-3 plus a bachelor’s degree in Child or Youth Development or related fields

Level 5: Levels 1-4 plus an advanced degree in Child or Youth Development or related fields

Salary Range:  $17,490 – $54,780 per year

Professional Standards: In addition to the National Afterschool Association Code of Ethics²the North Carolina Center for Afterschool Programs (NCCAP) defined Core Competencies under primary content areas related to job. Content Areas include¹:
